New Zealand cricketer Jesse
Ryder is in a coma with a
fractured skull following an
early morning assault by at least
two people in Christchurch.
Ryder was taken to Christchurch
Hospital's emergency department
early on Thursday after the assault
in Merivale.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brian
Archer says the 28-year-old was
leaving Aikman's Bar with a group
of people when he became involved
in an incident, which then carried
on a short distance away.
He said police are piecing together
what took place, speaking to
witnesses and reviewing CCTV
footage. He appealed for anyone
who witnessed the incident to
contact police.
St John Ambulance says they were
called to Papanui Road at 12.34am
and took a man with very serious
head injuries to hospital.
Radio New Zealand News
understands the cricketer is in a
coma with a fractured skull and
collapsed lung.
The manager of Aikman's Bar has
confirmed CCTV cameras were
filming the premises at the time.
Steve Holmes says he has reviewed
video footage but would not
confirm whether it showed an
attack.
Mr Holmes says the player was at
the bar with his Wellington
Firebirds teammates.
Sinister, vicious attack, says Key
Prime Minister John Key says he
was shocked by the news of the
"vicious" attack.
"It sounds quite sinister to me, I
mean the fact that there would be
four guys attacking him.
"Just the media reports I saw
looked as if it was somewhat
unprovoked so there must be
something behind that, and the
assault seems extremely vicious."
The cricketer's manager Aaron Klee
thanked everyone for their support
and said on Twitter on Thursday
morning he was heading to
Christchurch to see Ryder.
A message from the Black Caps,
also on social media, said the
whole team's thoughts were with
their fellow player.
New Zealand Cricket is holding a
news conference now.
Representatives from New Zealand
Cricket and Cricket Wellington are
also speaking at the conference, at
the Christchurch police station.
Last month Ryder was picked up in
the Indian Premier League player
auction and was due to take up a
$308,000 contract with the Delhi
Daredevils shortly.
